The greatest character John Hughes ever penned is……..Buck Russell

Sure the Breakfast Club was great, and the hot chick from Weird Science is still in my fantasy file but nobody had the common man appeal of Buck Russell, or Uncle Buck as he is known to his relatives. Whether he is making oversized pancakes, or fending off the advances of the Horny Housewife next door, Buck Russell uses his everyman appeal to make you at once laugh, and be thankful that you aren’t stuck in his care. Hughes was a talented man even if he’s fallen off of late, I mean did you know there was a direct to TV Home Alone 4 that he penned? Many of Hughes’s characters are iconic so I welcome any and all debate on the matter. I will say this Ferris Bueller was meant to be my choice, he’s the reason for this post, but given the choice between world weary Uncle Buck, or a senior in high school who sings Danka Schein and refers to cars as Cia Bello, well I’ll take the middle aged fuck up.

Ferris Bueller is annoying.

My vote is for Anthony Michael Hall. I can't really pick a specific character since they were essentially all the same. The man was a prepubessent genius. Actually I take that back Weird Science was his crowning achievement. "Gi'me da keys. Gi'me da keys. I'll drive"

oh excellent point Phil. I forgot about the scene where he seamlessly transforms into a old black blues singer, Oscar how did you ignore him?

Buck Russell is the best choice pick. I'd put money on it...

um, you guys are all stupid. DUCKIE DALE!

all you need for proof is to watch him lip sync/dance/serenade andi (m.ringwald) with otis redding's 'try a little tenderness' - come on people. is there any more pure a love than that of duckie for andi??

"Drinking and driving don't mix, that's why I ride a bike."

Huh i always thought that after andi turned him down for the good rich guy, duckie just came out of the closet. And yeah duckie was a good character, but is it just me or does the fact the John Cryer has gone on to play the annoying brother opposite Charlie Sheen demean all he has ever done? Do present mistakes diminish past greatness.

no - present mistakes do not count against.

I have to agree that Uncle Buck has to be one of the best characters of all times. But that is a difficult statement to make since John Hughes had a pretty good run between 87-89 with films like Christmas Vacation (1989), Uncle Buck (1989), The Great Outdoors (1988), Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987).

Yes, John Candy was in 3/4 of the moves listed. So, really, I am saying that John Candy was John Hughes' best casting.
